Excel Functions for advanced users

Who hasn’t experienced this? You print an Excel worksheet and suddenly one column spills over to a second page, even though it fit just fine last time.

The cause: new data was added, slightly widening one of the columns. Often, the scaling option was previously set using a percentage—without realizing it had changed.

Excel print to one page

Solution

When you use the “Fit To” option under scaling, Excel will fit your entire sheet on one page automatically.

Instructions

  • Open the Excel sheet
  • Select the tab >> Page Layout
    Excel Page Layout tab
  • Click the small square in the bottom-right of the Page Setup group
    Open Page Setup dialog
  • Or click on >> Print Titles
    Print Titles option
  • Select the tab >> Page
    Page Setup tab
  • If your sheet has a fixed number of columns but more rows, set the scaling so it always prints 1 page wide.
  • Under “Scaling” >> choose Fit to and enter 1 page(s) wide
  • Leave the second box blank to let Excel determine the page height automatically. Or enter 1 to force everything onto one page.
  • Be sure the text remains readable when scaling is applied!
